From our
questionnaire results, I found that there isn’t a difference between whether
the person is male or female, but the main difference that is created is the
age range. As our chosen genre is pop, we saw from the results that the age
range that was mostly interested in ‘pop’ music videos is aged 16-18 year
olds. This was the most popular within our sixth form. We found that more ‘older’
music videos are consumed by the older generation which is what we expected
in the first place.

The classic, original way of watching music
videos is on music channels on the television. This is still a popular way of
watching them however; with new advances in technology there are many new
ways in which people are now watching music videos, such as YouTube and on
android phones. The fact that the internet is now increasing the amount of
music videos being watch. E.g. Gangnam Style is the most watched video on
YouTube with nearly 2 billion views. Within my research, I have discovered
that the devise that people watch the most music videos on is a mobile phone.
In my opinion, I feel that people watch them on their phone for easiness as
they can watch them anywhere on their phone on different apps such as
YouTube.
|
Following on from the previous box, I feel
that people watch them on their phones the most as it creates a sense of
belonging for them when watching them at home with siblings, school with
friends etc. When watching them at home, people can ‘go into their own world’
when listening to their type of music. It can change their mood and they can
feel an individual or be themselves. When at school, people can associate themselves
with different friendship groups and feel themselves around people. When
music videos are consumed on the internet, people can create different groups
or talk to people that are interested in that type of music, which also
creates a sense of belonging within societies.

Consuming Habits (Main)
Do's and Dont's when making a music video
Do’s
1. Consistency from start to finish.
2. A clear sense of genre and artist - make sure the audience knows.
3. A good & natural performance - keep the audience entertained.
4. An idea that is simple yet effective - media students don't have much resources
5. Creative editing - but not too over the top
Don’ts
1. Well - known song (don't be tempted to copy original video).
2. Over done effects - shouldn't use effects to disguise poor footage.
3. Aimless driving around - it's boring and it's not creative.
4. Scenes involving alcohol, drugs or fags (even stimulated).
5. Shots of people just walking around - it will become boring for the audience.
6. Speeding up the footage or putting it in reverse - it becomes confusing.
7. Zooms.
8. Footage from elsewhere - should be your own unless there's a good reason.
9. Over the top narrative.
Comments of Questionnaire
Above are some the comments that we received recently from people that completed our online questionnaire. We made the questionnaire public online, as well as asking people in our sixth form, as we felt that this would enhance the amount of responses we received. As we can see from the largest comment, we could of added a larger range of genres to the question, "what genre of music do you listen to the most?". However, we felt that this wouldn't of made much of a difference to us as we used this question to pick a genre for our music video, and we most likely wouldn't of gone for 'classical' or 'country'. Other than this, we received positive comments from the rest of the people who completed the questionnaire.
Chosen Song
The song we have chosen for our music video and to create the ancillary tasks is 'California Gurls' by Katy Perry. We decided to use this song as the lyrics are not very meaningful and basically anything we create will relate to the lyrics. We also chose this song as it speaks about seasonal aspects which will relate to our seasonal/holiday narrative. Even though it will be colder and wintery when we create our music video, as we will be using shots from Centre Parcs, this will involve swimming pools and other holiday aspects.
The link below is the original music video of Katy Perry's California Gurls.
Chosen Genre
We have decided as a group to do the genre of pop, from the analysis of different videos from YouTube, music videos on television and the type of music that we all listen to. We also decided on this genre as it was the most popular on the questionnaire results, and would like well with the most popular narrative (seasonal/holiday).
1). As we have limited resources as media students, we think that a Pop video would be the easiest for us to do, as we all know the main aspects of a pop music video, and also pop can be a very wide variety of genre, where artists can include a variety of different aspects.
2). We found that seasonal/holiday theme would be a good narrative to use as our two friends are visiting 'Centre Parcs' at Sherwood Forest, which is close to our town and we can visit them for a day and get a few shots of the 'Christmas' themed village. Also we would like to include shots of people 'having fun' at this seasonal time so we think that this would be a great place to visit, to get a few basic shots to include within the music video.
3). The final point we made as a group, is that we feel that we have the right clothing, makeup etc., to associate ourselves as a 'pop' band, and have the knowledge to know how to act in a pop video. Whereas, if we were doing say a 'rock' video, we are obviously not the type of people to act that way in a rock video.
Below are some pop artists that show themselves as people that us as a group may look up too and associate as the type of people that may be in our music video.

Song Choice Options
Here I have created a mind map of some of the research we have done on YouTube to see which song we may think about doing for our music video. There are quite a few options at this moment in time, however we have gone with the theme of girl bands or female artist as we think this will be easier to do seeing as there are three girls in our group. Alice and I searched YouTube starting with Nicki Minaj as she is a current popular artist, and then carrying on simply clicking on related searches that we felt would be suitable for us to do.
