YouTube is a video sharing website that was created by former Pay Pal employees in February 2005, and is now been owned by Google since 2006 who bought it for $1.65 billion. It allows internet users from all over the world to look at anything that YouTube members have uploaded onto the site such as, humorous videos, pranks people have made on people, music videos, educational purposes and lots more. Videos considered to contain potentially offensive content are available only to registered users at least 18 years old.
Uploading
To upload videos onto YouTube you must have a Google or Youtube account. This will allow users to upload any user generated videos that they may have made at home on their laptops using different programmes, music videos they have made or simply home videos that the world may find funny. Wikipedia (2013) states that, "All YouTube users can upload videos up to 15 minutes each in duration. Users who have a good track record of complying with the site's Community Guidelines may be offered the ability to upload videos up to 12 hours in length, which requires verifying the account, normally through a mobile phone."
Viewing
Viewing YouTube videos is so easy, when on the YouTube website, there is a clear search box at the top of the home page where users can simply type key words in or the whole name of the video and there will be a whole range of choices to pick from. Usually, the videos with the most views are displayed higher up, to promote their popularity. For example, the music video 'Gangnam Style', is the highest viewed video on YouTube with nearly 2 billion views. In a video uploaded in June 2009, YouTube announced that users can now upload 3D videos, which will continue to develop in the future.
